Prof. (Dr.) Shahid Akhter is a distinguished educationist, administrator, and public thinker whose career spans academia, policy-making, and nation-building initiatives. Currently serving as Member of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, he also holds the position of President of India’s Nominee (Visitor) on the Executive Council of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Dr. Akhter has held several high-impact leadership roles that reflect his commitment to educational equity and inclusive development:
- Former Vice-Chairman, National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), Ministry of Education, Government of India – advancing language promotion and cultural preservation initiatives.
- Former Chairman, Jharkhand State Minority Commission – with cabinet-rank status, where he championed minority rights, welfare schemes, and educational access at the state level.
His work in these roles has significantly shaped policies affecting minority communities, particularly in the areas of educational recognition, institutional autonomy, and socio-economic empowerment.
